Privacy Policy

Effective: October 4, 2026

Night Finder ("Night Finder," "we," "us," or "our") provides a community service for sharing and exploring reports of unusual or unexplained sightings. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, when it may be shared, and the choices you have.

1. Information We Collect

  • Account information, including your email address, authentication information, account identifier, and account status. Passwords are handled by our authentication provider and are not displayed to us.
  • Profile information, such as your username, optional display name, profile visibility setting, and optional profile photo.
  • Sighting information, including titles, descriptions, categories, dates, witness counts, locations, and optional photo evidence.
  • Location information when you choose to attach your device location to a sighting. Night Finder stores precise coordinates privately and publishes only an approximate location for a published sighting.
  • Community activity, including comments, saved sightings, and reports of content that may violate our rules.
  • Technical and security information that may be processed by our service providers, such as IP address, device or browser information, timestamps, diagnostic information, and authentication or security logs.

2. Device Permissions

Night Finder may request access to your location, camera, photo library, or microphone. These permissions are used only for features you choose, such as attaching location or evidence to a sighting. You may deny or revoke permissions in your device settings, although the related feature may then be unavailable. The current app accepts photo evidence; camera and microphone permissions may support future evidence-capture features.

3. How We Use Information

  • Provide, operate, secure, and improve Night Finder.
  • Create and manage accounts and profiles.
  • Publish sightings, approximate map locations, and visible community content.
  • Keep precise location information private from public users.
  • Process saves, comments, content reports, and moderation actions.
  • Respond to support, privacy, safety, and legal requests.
  • Prevent fraud, abuse, unauthorized access, and violations of our Terms.

4. What Other Users Can See

Published sightings and visible comments may be viewed by other users. Depending on your profile settings, users may also see your username, display name, profile photo, or other public profile information. Published map locations are approximate. Your account email, password, precise coordinates, saved-sighting list, and private content reports are not intended to be publicly displayed. Do not include private or sensitive information in public content.

5. Service Providers and Disclosures

We use service providers to host and operate Night Finder, including Supabase for authentication, database, server functions, and file storage; Expo and EAS for app development and distribution services; and Google Maps services for map functionality. These providers may process information under their own terms and privacy policies.

We may also disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with law or legal process; protect users, the public, or Night Finder; investigate fraud, abuse, or safety concerns; enforce our Terms; or complete a merger, financing, sale, or transfer of the service with appropriate protections.

Night Finder does not currently sell personal information or use personal information for targeted advertising. If that changes, we will update this policy and provide legally required choices.

6. Retention and Deletion

We retain information while your account is active and as reasonably necessary to operate, secure, and enforce the service. You may delete your own sightings and comments using available controls. You may permanently delete your account from the Profile screen. Account deletion removes the account and associated content from active Night Finder systems, subject to limited retention required for security, legal compliance, dispute resolution, or service-provider backup and log cycles.

7. Your Choices

  • Review and update profile information in the Profile screen.
  • Change device permissions through your operating-system settings.
  • Edit or delete eligible sightings and comments you created.
  • Remove saved sightings.
  • Delete your Night Finder account through the Profile screen.
  • Contact us with an access, correction, deletion, or privacy request.

8. Children

Night Finder is not directed to children under 13, and users must be at least 13 years old. We do not knowingly collect personal information from a child under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided information, contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.

9. Security and International Use

We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, but no online service can guarantee absolute security. Night Finder is operated from the United States. If you use it elsewhere, your information may be processed in the United States or other locations where our providers operate.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as Night Finder changes. We will revise the effective date and provide additional notice when required. Continued use after an update means the new policy applies to future use.
